Pilgrim Faith has a rich tradition of outreach, and the Mission Board is at the heart of many of those activities. The Mission Board has its own budget, supported by member pledges, and is funded separately from the church’s operating budget.
The Mission Board chooses projects from the many requests and voluntary sources, with the largest single recipient being the “Our Church’s Wider Mission” arm of the United Church of Christ. The Mission Board also sponsors and provides information about the UCC’s annual special offerings: One Great Hour of Sharing, Neighbors in Need, Veterans of the Cross and Strengthen the Church. In addition, Pilgrim Faith’s Alternative Christmas, with the opportunity to purchase gifts through Church World Service and Heifer International.
In addition to funding, the Mission Board also gives readily of its time. It is deeply involved in the Pilgrim Faith Food Pantry and PADS Homeless Shelter programs, which give us an opportunity to be “our brother’s and sister’s keeper” and see to the well-being of our community.
Our Adopted Child in the Philippines – Julican
We sponsor a young student named Julican in Dumaguete City in the Philippines. Born in 2003, Julican is an excellent student who studies hard and enjoys soccer. His father earns a meager living through electrical repair jobs. His mother care for Julican and his younger sister. Our support of $400 a year provide education for Julican and help so that his family can purchase medicine and other necessities. You can contribute to his support by donating your empty aluminum cans to Pilgrim Faith or by making a cash donation for “Julican.”
Pilgrim Faith encourages its members and friends to become an adult literacy tutor. By helping someone who can’t read improve their reading skills we make it possible for them to find better jobs, read to their children and feel good about themselves. Below is a list of places on the south side of the Chicago area where you can obtain training to be an adult literacy tutor and be paired with a student. Tutoring can usually be scheduled right in your own community!
